NAFD welcomes CMA funerals market order

The order will target hidden pricing structures within the industry, forcing funeral directors and crematorium operators to provide clearer and fairer prices to customers

The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) has welcomed the publication of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA’s) funerals market order.

First announced on 16 June 2021, the order will reach its final implementation on 16 September 2021.

The order will target hidden pricing structures within the industry, forcing funeral directors and crematorium operators to provide clearer and fairer prices to customers.

Jon Levett, chief executive at the NAFD, said: “Although many funeral firms do publish pricing information online, some don’t and there is a wide range of formats used which can be confusing for bereaved consumers at a difficult time.

“The CMA’s requirements, although extremely complex in places for small businesses to navigate, support the delivery of high standards to funeral consumers and bring consistency to the process of choosing a funeral director.”

In the build up to the order’s introduction, the NAFD has committed to supporting funeral firms “to ensure they have all the information they need to comply”.

Levett added that the body will also “provide feedback to the CMA” in relation to the new processes, enabling the regulator to “assist bereaved people in making informed choices, and promote healthy competition in the funeral sector”.
