Grandmother inspires funeral service success

A funeral service worker inspired to join the industry by his grandmother has been recognised for his services in caring for the bereaved.

Gary Storey, a driver/bearer for the Co-operative Funeralcare in County Durham, has achieved his NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Services.

Gary’s interest in the funeral profession was aroused by his grandmother, Lizzie Davies, who used to care for the deceased and help with births in the village of Craghead. Mrs Davies was often called upon to take care of babies or sit with someone through the night; something that left a big impression on her grandson: “I’ve always had a fascination with working in the funeral profession and she has a big influence on me. She was very well known and respected; there were hundreds of people at her funeral.”

Formerly a carpet fitter, Gary joined the funeral service industry in September 2010 and achieved his qualification in just under a year.

Speaking of his work, Gary added: “I feel privileged to help people during their time of need.”
