Charles Stephens marks 120th anniversary

Wirral’s largest independent funeral directors, Charles Stephens, is celebrating its 120th anniversary. To mark the event, the company has invested in a hand-built glass roofed Jaguar Hearse, due for delivery in the autumn. The vehicle will be first of its kind on the Wirral and will add to the business’ growing fleet of Jaguar limousines and hearses.

The fourth generation business plans to commemorate its 120th anniversary with a series of Open Days in August. Clients will also be offered £50 off the company’s Pre-Paid Funeral Plans.

People are invited to pop in for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat from August 15-19 between 10am-12pm at the branches in Rock Ferry, Heswall, Bromborough, Claughton, Neston and West Kirby.

The West Kirby branch is a recent addition to the business. The company’s Heswall and Bromborough offices were recently refitted. The remaining branches will undergo refurbishment over the coming months.

Managing director, Gemma Stephens, said: “I’m extremely proud of our company’s history of providing the people of the Wirral with a dignified funeral.

“Our staff are committed to the traditions of providing the very best funeral services while, at the same time, ensuring we meet the requirements of today’s families.

“Our remaining branches will all be refurbished over the next 18 months as we move towards a consistent brand identity across the Wirral.”

The firm was founded in 1896 by Charles Stephens and in 1993 merged with Henry Norman, another long established Wirral funeral directors.

Gemma Stephens took over as Managing Director from her father Jeremy six years ago. Jeremy continues to act as a senior consultant to the family business.
