Cheltenham FD to give eco-funeral talk

Cheltenham-based funeral director Ian George will give a talk to the townspeople about environmentally friendly funeral options.

George, who runs Ian George Funerals Ltd, will give the presentation at the offices of local sustainability group Vision 21 on 6 March. He is hopeful that presenting an array of eco-friendly funeral options will help turn more people green.

Attendees will learn about eco-coffins made from pine, waste wood, willow, banana plant leaves and cardboard. They can also find out more about the disappearing urn.

Jane Roberts, George’s assistant, said: “It is becoming more and more popular because people in their lives are generally become more concerned about the environment.

“We are quite firm believers in giving people options and while the traditional funeral is still the most popular, more people are definitely turning to wicker or biodegradable coffins.”

A ‘spring meadow’ window display has been created by the funeral director to showcase some of the greener products it offers.

Office manager at Vision 21 Claire Mitchell commented: “There really are many different styles of coffins now.

“We have a few people come to us who have mentioned this is the sort of option they are interested in so we decided to arrange a presentation.

“It’s not something people always think about so the event is open to anyone who just wants a bit more information.”
