A funeral director and crematorium have both apologised to a family after the wrong coffin was used in a funeral service even after staff had been alerted to the mistake.Apology issued for using wrong coffin at Loughborough funeral

Loughborough and District Funeral Service, which is part of the Midlands Co-Operative, took the coffin to a Leicester Road site in Pinfold Gate on 21 February, where a staff member noticed that the name of on the lid was incorrect.

Despite staff being alerted to the mistakenly delivered coffin, the service was allowed to go ahead with the wrong deceased lying before grieving relatives.

Dignity Funerals, which owns the crematorium at which the service took place said no cremation took place and that an investigation to find out why staff allowed the service to go ahead, is underway.

The affected families have not been named.
