Caerphilly County Borough Council is seeking volunteers to attend funerals for people who die without family or friends, as part of a new initiative to support public health burials.
The scheme, launched by the council’s bereavement service, aims to ensure that no individual is buried alone and that every funeral is witnessed with dignity.
Volunteer funeral attendees will be present at public health burials arranged by the council for residents who die in the borough with no one to arrange or attend their funeral. The role involves attending the ceremony as a mark of respect and remembrance.
Volunteers will receive training and support from the bereavement services team, along with resources and reimbursement for reasonable travel costs.
Chris Morgan, cabinet member for waste, leisure and green spaces, said: “I’m proud that Caerphilly and its communities have the chance to take part in this initiative.
“It is an opportunity to volunteer in a simple act that will help ensure that every life is honoured, and every farewell is witnessed with dignity.”
