Pendle Borough Council has approved plans for a new 6.3-hectare multi-faith cemetery, which is due to be built on the Nelson-Brierfield border.
The burial ground, on land off Edge End Avenue and Halifax Road, will provide space for around 4,500 graves, as well as areas for ash interment, ornamental planting and memorial trees.
The existing cemetery in Nelson, located on Walton Lane, is projected to reach its full capacity within four years. Consequently, this new facility will cater to the needs of residents throughout Pendle.
Cllr Asjad Mahmood, deputy leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “A lot of thought and consideration went into finding the right location for a site which would be suitable for a dignified burial space in an attractive green environment.”
Members of the Nelson, Brierfield and Reedley Committee approved the plans despite concerns from nearby residents about pedestrian access to neighbouring allotments. Mahmood said there were “no material reasons to object” under planning law and no objections from the Environment Agency.
The approval comes with conditions, including detailed drainage and water management strategies before work begins, restrictions on burial plots near neighbouring properties, measures to protect trees and hedgerows during construction, and safe access for construction traffic. External lighting will require approval to limit disruption to residents and protect wildlife.
David Walker, the council’s assistant director of operational services, said: “The design of the new cemetery has taken time to develop, and we have considered residents’ comments and suggestions as we have worked through the planning process.”
Cllr Mohammad Hanif, portfolio holder for health and leisure services, added: “This is a much-needed facility with Nelson’s current cemetery nearing full capacity and will be created to benefit the whole community – whatever people’s religion.”
