Farewill demand for cremations jumps 112% in 12 months

The private company has also found that one in 10 UK wills are now written through its will-writing service

Farewill, a will-writing, probate, and cremation services provider, has experienced a 112% rise in demand for direct cremations in the past 12 months, according to its Year in Wills report 2023.

The news comes after SunLife’s latest Cost of Dying report revealed that funeral expenses have increased by 126% since 2004.

According to the same report released by SunLife, direct cremation has accounted for 20% of all funerals in the past 12 months as opposed to just 3% in 2019.

Meanwhile, the private company has found that one in 10 UK wills are now written through its will-writing service.

Amid the current cost-of-living crisis, many Brits have seen a price hike in giving their loved ones their desired send-off.

As a result, in an effort to serve as a more cost-effective measure, Farewill has saved customers £20m per year and upwards of £60m since the company originally launched in 2015.

Dan Garrett, CEO of Farewill, said: “It’s disappointing to see funeral costs on the rise again. At a time when people need every bit of support they can get, adding in financial stress can prevent families from grieving properly and finding the right way to celebrate their loved ones.

“Encouragingly, direct cremation is still going strong, giving over 100,000 families the option to do things their own way, for a quarter of the price.”
