Bristol Memorial Woodlands to bring back candlelight service

Bristol Memorial Woodlands in South Gloucestershire has announced that its candlelight service will return on Sunday 26 October to mark All Souls Day. 

The outdoor event, which commemorates loved ones who have died, will take place in front of the venue’s Georgian reception rooms. It has previously drawn more than 200 attendees, who light candles to illuminate the Memorial Tree at the centre of the grounds.

The evening includes choir performances, readings and a short secular service. Organisers said the gathering has become one of the most popular events on the woodlands’ annual calendar.

Christopher Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “Our All Souls Candlelight Service is one of our most popular gatherings. While originally attended mainly by families with loved ones resting here, it has grown into a community event that welcomes anyone who wishes to remember and pay their respects.

“It’s an incredibly moving evening, seeing hundreds of candles placed around our Memorial Tree, and reminds us that we can still remember, celebrate and honour the loved ones we have lost.”

He added: “All Souls Day has significance in many religions and is celebrated across the world. It provides people with a meaningful occasion to remember and reflect upon their departed loved ones.”

The service begins at 6pm, with guests invited to arrive from 5.15pm to collect candles. Light refreshments will be served afterwards in the reception rooms.
