Colchester Crematorium has hosted its bi-annual open day in May to show residents the facility and explain its technical processes, providing transparency and reassuring the public about how the team handles cremation.

More than 100 people took part in guided tours of the facility throughout the day, according to Colchester City Council. A further 40 visitors joined a heritage walk led by Sharon Mooney, who shared the histories behind the site monuments.

Exhibitors from local and national businesses set up booths to offer guidance on bereavement and memorial services. Emily from Hoopers Genealogists sponsored the refreshments, while a group called the Blanketeers raised £63 through coffee and tea sales.

David King, deputy leader of Colchester City Council and portfolio holder for communities and public protection, said: “We were delighted by the wonderful feedback from the event, which perfectly showcased our beautiful, well-maintained Colchester site as a supportive space for open conversations about an important part of life.

“The day was a true celebration of both professional dedication and Colchester’s warm community spirit. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, participated, and donated so generously.”
