Witton Cemetery in Northwich has received a gold award in the Parish, Town and Community Burial Grounds category at the 2025 Cemetery of the Year Awards.

The awards, organised by the Memorial Awareness Board (MAB) in partnership with the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM), recognise high standards in cemetery management, community engagement and environmental care.

This year’s winners were announced at the ICCM Learning Convention and Exhibition yesterday (20 October).

The competition celebrates best practice in the operation of burial grounds across the UK, including compliance with legislation and the provision of modern services.

Philip Potts of the Memorial Awareness Board said: “The awards are an excellent opportunity to reward hard-working staff and demonstrate the central role cemeteries and churchyards can play in the community. They provide places of peaceful contemplation and beauty, as well as their historical, social and ecological importance.”

Northwich Town Council, which manages the site, was commended for its performance across judging criteria including industry standards, good practice and freedom of choice.

Town mayor, councillor Julie Macdonald, added: “I am proud Northwich Town Council has been recognised and celebrated in winning the gold award for best cemetery. This is a testament to the staff’s dedication, exceptional standards of care and commitment. The award is not only a reflection of the team’s skill and dedication but also of their values and purpose.”

The Cemetery of the Year Awards are supported by several professional bodies, including the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities, the Society of Local Council Clerks and the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons.

Established in 1891, Witton Cemetery covers around 20 acres on Church Road, Northwich. It includes sections for traditional burials, cremated remains and war graves maintained with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
