Harborough District Council has completed Northampton Road Cemetery’s extension and improvement works.

Expanding into the grounds at the rear of Harborough Leisure Centre, an additional 76 burial plots have been created.

The council said that it has also improved landscaping provision to the cemetery boundary so that the site “is better enclosed and more tranquil for families and friends to remember loved ones”.

When the plans were submitted to extend the cemetery, concerns were raised about how close the extension would be to the football pitches.

A four metre fence was later installed to stop balls flying into the cemetery.

Caroline Averill, head of property services at Harborough District Council, said: “I am pleased that these upgrades, which have cost £50,000, have been completed. Most importantly, the extension will provide more burial spaces for future years.”
