South Lakeland District Council has approved planning permission for a former fire station, The Ellers, in Ulverston to be turned into a funeral directors.

The proposal was submitted to the council to turn the defunct building into a funeral directors and memorial chapel last year after the building was sold at auction for £327k last year.

According to the plans, which were submitted in the summer of 2021, the funeral directors would include a chapel, memorial chapel, reception area, waiting room, cold store, prep room, office, lobby and waiting area.

In addition, plans also included the demolition of the training tower on the old fire station site,  which had reportedly been part of the town’s skyline for nearly 50 years.

The planning application stated that the training tower is “now obsolete with no future use and in disrepair” due to trespassers.

The Ulverston firefighters have relocated to the Blue Light Hub.
