Central Co-op has raised more than £700 for a bereavement charity, after two of its funeral assistants from Birmingham have climbed Snowdon.

Sophie Cale and Evonie Day, who work at Central Co-op’s funeral home in Stirchley, took on the Snowdon Sunrise Challenge in aid of the Lily Mae Foundation, which supports families affected by the loss of a baby.

The pair began their ascent at 1am to reach the summit by sunrise, completing the round trip by 7am. The charity is of personal significance to Cale, who received its support following her own loss.

Cale said: “We just wanted to give something back. The Lily Mae Foundation helps families when they need it most, and we see every day how important that support is.”

The challenge forms part of Central Co-op’s celebrations for Co-op Fortnight (23 June – 6 July), a nationwide campaign organised by Co-operatives UK to highlight the impact of co-operative values in local communities.

Cale and Day are among a small number of colleagues featured in the ‘We Can Be Heroes’ campaign, which profiles individuals helping to improve the lives of others through co-operation.

Central Co-op said their efforts embodied “the compassionate spirit of co-operation in action”.
