Cromer Crematorium has received a 98.5% overall score in an inspection by the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA), with the site achieving full marks in five out of six assessed areas.

The inspection was carried out in December by FBCA inspector Dave Clay, who said he did not consider it necessary to make any recommendations following his visit.

The FBCA is the UK’s main representative body for burial and cremation authorities and supports its members in the delivery of more than 400,000 funerals each year.

Its Cremation Compliance Scheme examines six key areas of service delivery, involving discussion and inspection across more than 80 points of interest. Cromer Crematorium achieved 100% scores in five of those six areas.

The site is part of Westerleigh Group, an independent operator of crematoria and cemeteries with 42 locations across England, Scotland and Wales.

The inspection found the crematorium to be operating in line with three principal compliance requirements: the Cremation Regulations 2009 relating to statutory documentation; the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Process Guidance notes 5/12 relating to cremation; and the Code of Cremation Practice covering all aspects of service delivery.

Mark Carpenter, manager of Cromer Crematorium, said: “I’m very proud that we have earned top marks in five of the six key areas of service, and an overall inspection score of 98.5%.

“As part of Westerleigh Group, we are committed to ensuring everything we do is done with exceptional levels of care and support, and earning such a positive report from the FBCA inspector shows that we are doing that.”

He added: “I must pay tribute to my team here at Cromer; an inspection report like this is a reflection of the professionalism, dedication and commitment shown every single day by the team. Membership of the FBCA is entirely voluntary and not all cremation operators choose to join.

“However, we take great pride in the consistently high standards we uphold across every aspect of our work and we welcome the opportunity for our facilities and practices to be independently assessed by industry experts.”
