Plans for a new crematorium in Chapelton, Aberdeenshire have been given the green light by the council due to a “significant” demand for services.

Southesk Farms put in an application last October for the new crematorium on the Elsick Estate near Newtonhill.

The company plans to build a new hall and crematorium next to the walled garden of the historic Elsick House.

A swimming pool building currently on the site will be demolished to make way for the new crematorium.

The plans were initially considered at a meeting in February but councillors agreed to visit the site amid concerns over parking.

The hall being built alongside the crematorium has also been designed with other functions such as weddings in mind.

Councillor Alison Evison said: “The nature of what’s available on the site already is important when thinking about transport and travel arrangements that people have been concerned about.”

The planning permission was unanimously approved by the council.
