Developer Elegy has announced plans to open a crematorium in Maldon Town, Essex situated opposite St Margaret’s Church.

The area benefits from mature hedgerows on three sides and a small copse which can be used to screen the building and provide a private spot for funerals.

Currently, bereaved families in Maldon have to travel to Chelmsford for their nearest crematorium or further afield to Basildon, Braintree or Colchester.

The new service is expected to look after 950 cremations a year, less than four per day on average.

The main part of the building is a 100-seat ceremony space which also includes a waiting room, accessible public toilets, a small office with family meeting room and crematory.

It will also offer 88 car parking spaces, including electric charging points, and four disabled.
