Funerals taking place in Carlisle may be live streamed to family members who are unable to attend the funerals of a loved one, amid UK lockdown due to the recent outbreak of the coronavirus.

According to Carlisle City Council, funeral ceremonies are now only open to immediate family members, with a cap on no more than 12 people attending.

On Monday, prime minister Boris Johnson urged UK residents to stay at home to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The new guidelines also mention that although places of worship have also closed, funerals are still allowed to go ahead with only the immediate family attending.  The guidelines will initially last for the three weeks from 23 March, at which point the government will look at them again and “relax them” if the evidence shows this is possible.

Following the announcement of the new guidelines, the Cemetery and Crematorium office in Carlisle has now closed to the public.
