Memorial company Resting Reef has organised a public webinar for tomorrow (29 April), which will see funeral industry leaders and designers debate the increasing popularity of regenerative death care in Britain.
It comes as Resting Reef is looking to examine why younger generations are moving away from traditional Victorian-style funerals in favour of ecological alternatives.
The roundtable – titled ‘Regenerative Death: Shifting Perceptions and Challenging Traditional Practices’ – will feature speakers from Blue Earth Summit, the Royal College of Art, and Thereafter UK.
Panellists will discuss how celebrations of life and living funerals are replacing inherited rituals, with sessions due to be moderated by Resting Reef co-founders Louise Skajem and Aura Murillo.
Resting Reef has recently launched Plan Ahead, a service that allows individuals to reserve future memorial reefs during their lifetime. These reefs are designed to support marine biodiversity.
Recent data from Resting Reef’s pilot site in Bali indicated that such structures attracted 102 fish species and increased diversity 17 times compared to degraded areas over 12 months.
Skajem said: “We regularly interact with people who use words like ‘beautiful,’ ‘meaningful,’ and even ‘cool’ to describe what we offer through Resting Reef. I don’t think those are words that are generally used when describing traditional death care services.
“I believe we are witnessing a generational shift, with people increasingly seeking death care options that reflect 21st Century values and needs.”
