Walker and Morrell Funeral Directors has announced the opening of a new branch in Leam Lane, 24 years after the company began operating in Gateshead and Washington.

The company is the only funeral provider currently based on the estate after converting a building in Fewster Square into a dedicated funeral home. The site includes private spaces for funeral planning and mourning.

The business was founded in 2002 by John Morrell and Lynne Walker. It is now part of the Funeral Partners network, which operates more than 290 homes across the UK.

Area development manager Martin Morrell, who has worked for the company for 15 years, oversaw the expansion. The team also recently appointed Samantha Rutherford as a funeral director to staff the new branch.

The refurbishment was completed in March, with the doors opening to the public on 30 March.

Morrell said: “As far back as I can remember we have provided funerals for the people of Leam Lane. But having a physical base close to where they live is only going to help them more in what is, of course, a difficult time.

“We already have funeral homes in central Gateshead and Washington, so this really was a natural fit for us to ensure we can help even more people over the coming years. The team has done a fantastic job on the building, completely refurbishing it and making it into a funeral home we are proud of.”

Rutherford added: “I’m looking forward to working in the Leam Lane area and getting to know the local people. It’s an honour to guide families through one of life’s most difficult moments, helping to arrange the funeral service where their loved one’s memory can be honoured and providing comfort when most needed. I also love the connection I get to build with the families I serve.”
