Newport-based family-run funeral director Michael G Ryan Son and Daughters has officially joined the Funeral Partners network, with the founding family retaining control of day-to-day operations.

The company, which has been serving South Wales for more than 27 years, also operates a second branch in Cardiff and will continue to trade under its existing name.

Story Stream: More on Funeral Partners

News of the acquisition comes as Funeral Partners continues its expansion in Wales.

Michael G Ryan Son and Daughters was established in 1998 by business principal Michael Ryan, who moved into the funeral sector after a career in construction that included work refurbishing funeral homes. His wife, funeral director Pat Ryan, was involved from the outset and led the Cardiff branch until her retirement in November 2023.

The couple’s daughters have both worked in the business. Their eldest daughter, managing partner Louise Ryan, joined full time after initially working behind the scenes and directed her first funeral aged 19. Her sister, Rachael Ryan, began working as a funeral director at 16 after leaving school and later moved to the Cardiff branch in 2014.

The acquisition follows what the family described as a lengthy period of consideration, during which other approaches were declined. The family said Funeral Partners’ approach to maintaining local identity was a key factor in the decision.

Michael Ryan said: “We’ve built a very well-known name in Newport and people know what we stand for. What made Funeral Partners different was their understanding that every funeral home has its own history and community ties. They’ve respected that from day one.”

Louise Ryan said: “While there have been positive operational upgrades to systems and processes, including refreshed interiors at the funeral home, the team supporting our families and the quality service and ethos remain unchanged.”

Sam Kershaw, chief executive of Funeral Partners, added: “Michael G Ryan Son and Daughters will continue to provide the exemplary service to the community it has become so well known for, and we welcome their wealth of experience to the Funeral Partners family.”
