Great Wyrley Cemetery opens as ‘peaceful place’ for remembrance

A cemetery that will eventually deliver enough burial plots for the next 50 years has been officially opened in Great Wyrley, Staffordshire.

Strawberry Lane cemetery, inUpper Landywood Lane, Great Wyrley, has been built after a local developer gifted the 4.9 hectare stretch of land, the equivalent of five rugby pitches, to South Staffordshire Council last year.

Since then, contractors have been working on the site to transform it into a modern cemetery, landscaping and planting on the edge of the site as well as performing engineering works on the arterial road and adding car parking spaces.

The cemetery, which will eventually provide 8,000 burial plots, was opened on 4 July by Rita Heseltine, chairman of South Staffordshire Council, who planted a tree in honour of the opening.
