Lelley Fields partners with Sheep Sanctuary to recycle farm waste

Lelley Fields Crematorium in Holderness will be supplying local charity, the Sheep Sanctuary, with support in the form of hay for bedding and winter fodder in a bid to reduce waste.  

The facility, which is operated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, contains expansive open spaces, ponds, and wildflower meadows, which require ongoing maintenance during this time of year. 

As a result, the wildflower meadows have been cut to ensure their regrowth for the following year, and the old foliage donated to the Sheep Sanctuary. 

Lelley Fields “actively” encourages local wildlife to use the site through the provision of bird and bat nesting boxes, as well as composting floral tributes for the benefit of the crematorium gardens.

The Sheep Sanctuary rescue and give sanctuary to sheep and goats, including orphaned lambs. The charity also educates the public on the animals and brings lambs to care homes and schools for pet therapy.

Christine Walker-Kelley, crematorium manager at Lelley Fields, said: “We are delighted to support this local charity by donating hay from the meadows at Lelley Fields Crematorium. 

“It’s a wonderful way to give back to the community, help the environment, and contribute to the well-being of animals in need.”

Jackie Walton, manager of Sanctuary Sheep, added: “We’re very grateful for the kind donation from Lelley Fields, which will support our sheep over the coming year. 

“We welcomed everyone to our fayre and car boot sale on 25 August for a family day out, and to learn more about the sanctuary’s work.”
