Leicester Mayor opens new MBCOL resource centre

The Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire’s (MBCOL) new resource centre has been officially opened by Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.

Established in 1994, MBCOL was the first organisation of its kind in Europe that worked with the local authority to create the provision for out of hours funerals.

MBCOL chair Suleman Nagdi MBE DL said: “We are very happy to have acquired an office which meets our professional requirements [and] of the community we serve, as the breadth and depth of our work has increased over the past few years.”

MBCOL is involved in many aspects of the bereavement process and works with other groups that are both faith and non-faith based.

Nagdi continued: “Our work has been recognised locally, nationally and internationally in various ways; including both the Golden and Diamond Jubilee awards for voluntary service.”

Sir Peter Soulsby added: “MBCOL is unique in the work that it carries out, and this fantastic resource centre will hopefully allow MBCOL to carry out its outstanding work for many years to come.

“I’m particularly proud of the partnership that the City Council has had with MBCOL for almost 20 years and I wish MBCOL the greatest of success in their future endeavours.”

The resource centre is open for use to all communities.
