Central Co-op unveils new eco funeral plans following member survey

In a recent Central Co-op survey, 69% said sustainability was important when planning a funeral, while 48% viewed natural burial as an eco-friendly choice

Central Co-op Funeral Plans has introduced new products designed to give customers more flexibility and environmentally-conscious options, in response to feedback from over 400 members and customers.

The updated range includes a “Natural Plan” with biodegradable coffins and tree planting, and a “Flexible Plan” that allows personalisation within a set structure.

In a recent Central Co-op survey, 69% said sustainability was important when planning a funeral, while 48% viewed natural burial as an eco-friendly choice. Most respondents (86%) associated sustainable funerals with coffins made from materials like wicker or cardboard.

The Natural Plan includes coffins made from bamboo, banana leaf or Fairtrade pandanus, and offers electric hearses where possible. The plan also includes tree planting in publicly accessible woodlands, which Central Co-op said reinforces its environmental commitments.

Meanwhile, the Flexible Plan lets customers choose elements such as the type of coffin and funeral transport while keeping costs fixed. Central Co-op said this meets demand for structured but customisable plans that reflect individual values.

For those seeking lower-cost options, the Unattended Plan offers cremation without a formal service or mourners present. It includes a basic coffin, private transport and a “dignified cremation”, aimed at people seeking a simpler farewell.

Lee Bevan, operations director at Central Co-op Funeral Plans, said: “We’re committed to listening to our communities and evolving our offerings to meet their needs. With our plans, you can have your funeral, your way, with a personalised service that captures your life story.”

Bevan added that the plans aim to relieve financial and emotional pressure on families by locking in costs and offering flexible payment options with no health restrictions.
