Camden Council has begun statutory consultation on amended plans for the Unlocking Highgate Cemetery Conservation Masterplan, following the removal of a proposed gardeners’ building from the scheme.

The Highgate Cemetery Trust confirmed that the building has been withdrawn from the planning application after feedback from stakeholders. The amended plans will be considered by the council’s planning committee later this year.

The trust said it is continuing to update grave owners, community groups and other stakeholders, and will work with them over the coming months to identify options for future gardeners’ facilities.

If approved, the conservation masterplan would enable essential works across the cemetery while protecting its historic landscape. It includes measures to repair and safeguard fragile monuments, restore the balance between wild and cultivated areas, and enhance biodiversity, accessibility and flood resilience.

The trust said the plans would help to secure Highgate Cemetery’s long-term role as a place of reflection, remembrance and learning.

Maintaining momentum, it added, is key to meeting National Lottery Heritage Fund deadlines and securing funding for urgent conservation work.
