Central Co-op marks £350k milestone in Samaritans partnership

Central Co-op has raised £350k for Samaritans in the first year of its charity partnership, which was launched on World Mental Health Day 2024 following a vote by members in support of mental health initiatives.

The partnership was established after nearly 17,000 members took part in the selection process, choosing Samaritans from hundreds of applicants to become the Society’s official charity partner.

Over the past year, colleagues, members and customers have held a range of fundraising activities, including raffles, dawn walks, bake sales and sponsored challenges. The money raised will support Samaritans’ work providing free, round-the-clock emotional support across the UK and Ireland.

Central Co-op members and customers can also contribute through the Pennies scheme, which allows donations by rounding up card payments by 10p on purchases over £5.

Funds raised by the Society will help Samaritans maintain its helplines, recruit and train volunteers, and keep local branches open.

Hannah Gallimore, social change manager at Central Co-op, said: “Our members told us loud and clear that mental health matters to them, and we’re proud to have turned that commitment into meaningful action. 

“Reaching £350k in our first year is a testament to the compassion and energy of our colleagues and customers. Together, we’re helping Samaritans be there for anyone who needs someone to listen – day or night.”

As the partnership enters its second year, Central Co-op said it will continue to promote mental health awareness across its communities, focusing on both fundraising and encouraging “everyday acts of kindness and connection”.
