Hinckley and Bosworth council to sell land for crem development

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has revealed its intention to sell land off the A47 Leicester Road for an undisclosed sum to be developed exclusively as a crematorium.  

News of the sale comes after the local authority reviewed the business case following rising construction costs and difficulties within the contractor market. However, it said it remains committed to the project. 

Councillors gave cross-party support to sell the Earl Shilton site to an experienced developer on the condition the land is used only for the purpose of a crematorium.

According to the council, bidders must demonstrate a track record in developing crematoria and prove they can meet delivery timescales to ensure the facility serves the community’s needs.

A successful provider may use existing council-approved plans but will be required to renew highways and ecological assessments before work begins.

In addition, any significant changes to the design or layout would require a new planning application through the standard process.

Keith Lynch, executive member for finance, ICT and asset management at the borough council, said: “I have always been committed to delivering a crematorium for Hinckley. This stance has not changed and never will. I thank my fellow elected Members across all parties for their backing on this proposal. 

“We are still determined to ensure that a modern, fit-for-purpose crematorium facility is built to serve our community. It is important that our residents have an alternative, affordable facility close to home that will reduce waiting and travelling times while creating jobs for local people.”

He added: “I look forward to seeing the bids that potential providers submit. Only the best one for Hinckley and Bosworth will be progressed.”
