Child bereavement seminar returns for 2018

Brake, the road safety charity, is delighted to announce that its ‘Supporting suddenly bereaved children and young people’ seminars will return with four dates in 2018.

Thanks to funding provided by Slater and Gordon Lawyers, these events will be held in Manchester on Thursday 21 June, Birmingham on Thursday 28 June, London on Thursday 5 July and Cardiff on Thursday 22 November 2018.

These events provide a chance for educators, support workers and counsellors to develop their skills and knowledge in supporting suddenly bereaved children. Attendees will be offered a professional development opportunity, and will be able to discuss best practice with a range of field leaders and experts.

Offering an accessible and interactive chance for professionals to develop their understanding of the impact of grief and bereavement in children, the events also provide a great networking opportunity.

These seminars are being delivered by Sudden, a project coordinated by Brake.

Following Brake’s extensive experience supporting families bereaved suddenly by road crashes, Sudden was founded as a project for sharing best practice in all types of sudden bereavement support among professionals. Sudden brings together academics, victim support professionals, and others to share and promote best practice.

Practitioners and academics specialising in sudden bereavement will discuss:

  • Symptoms and emotions that suddenly bereaved children and young people may experience;
  • Guidance on methods that practitioners can use to ensure suddenly bereaved children are fully supported;
  • Insights into the ways in which young people understand and comprehend grief;
  • An overview of cultural and religious issues that support workers may encounter when supporting people who have been suddenly bereaved;
  • Sign-posting to a range of services, resources and organisations that are available for practitioners working with bereaved children and young people

Attendees can register for these seminars online, by calling +44 (0)1484 559909, or emailing jkushner@brake.org.uk. The cost to attend is £71 +VAT.

Jack Kushner, victim support events and marketing officer at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “We are delighted that these seminars are returning in 2018, and proud that we have been able to extend the reach of the events, helping ensure that as many professionals as possible will able to benefit.

“At Brake we are passionate about providing important professional development opportunities, and would encourage all support workers to attend one of these events, to help develop their skills. A sudden bereavement can have a traumatic ripple effect on children and their families, and it is vital that young people are provided with comprehensive care.

“These events provide a great chance for support professionals to ensure that they are able to provide the best possible support, should the worst happen.”
