Both men are described as black, in their late 20s and of a short and stocky build. Both men had short beards and were wearing dark clothing.

Cllr David Bittleston, leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “I regret to confirm that a serious incident took place at Brookwood Cemetery late yesterday [Wednesday 19 July 2017] afternoon in which two members of staff were attacked and suffered stab wounds.

“One was stabbed in the chest and taken to hospital by air ambulance, and remains in a serious yet not life threatening condition, whilst the other was taken to hospital with stab wounds to the arms and was thankfully released yesterday evening.

“This was a frightening attack on two members of staff who were simply carrying out their jobs. We are all deeply saddened by this unprovoked and vicious attack.

“At this time our thoughts are with those affected, their families and colleagues who were present at the time.

“We will do whatever we can to support Surrey Police with its ongoing investigations.”
