Date set for post mortem reconstructive course

William Purves Embalming Academy will hold a five day post mortem reconstructive surgery course at The University of Edinburgh’s Old Medical School, beginning on April 9 2018. The course will be held by Martin Jeffrey M.B.I.E. Dip FD and Ross Corney M.B.I.E Dip FD.

It provides an opportunity to study a hands-on, practical approach to cranial/facial reconstruction, soft tissue injury to the face and airbrush cosmetics. A series of structured modules have been specifically devised to give those completing the course the ability and knowledge necessary to complete the reconstruction of a badly traumatised head.

This course is the first of its kind in Scotland and the United Kingdom and it will be available to those embalmers who desire to increase their skill levels in the area of Post Mortem Reconstructive Surgery.

Using cadaveric specimens, the skills and techniques taught on this course will provide those attending with the ability to reconstruct a badly traumatised case and turn a closed coffin into an open coffin for viewing.

The staff at Edinburgh University Anatomy Department have invited students on the course spend five days at one of the country’s oldest and most historic medical schools. There will be time to tour the university’s anatomical museum which was founded in 1798. It has an impressive list of historic exhibits on display, one of these being the skeleton of the infamous William Burke. A tour will be given by Iain Campbell, the Anatomy Manager at Edinburgh University, who will be showing the exhibits and explaining the stories behind them.

The Dodge Company Ltd will be supplying a very extensive reconstruction kit that will cover everything needed to complete the course.

Applications are now being taken for the course. The dates for the October 2018 course are still to be confirmed, applications to note interest will be accepted. Places will be limited to six students.

The five day course is £2898 incl VAT. Covered in this cost will be a set of surgical scrubs and the use of the Dodge reconstruction kit. A new reconstruction kit is available to buy direct from Dodge at a discounted price only to students of this course. On completion of the course, those attending will be presented with a certificate of achievement, having completed 40 hours of specialised instruction in facial / cranial reconstruction, soft tissue injuries to the face and airbrush cosmetics.

Those wishing to attend should apply online at www.embalmingacademy.com/reconstruction.
