Man admits breaking into funeral home and having sex with corpse

Kasim Khuram, from Birmingham, has admitted breaking into a Co-op funeral home and committing sexual penetration of a body.

Sentencing for the 23 year old was adjourned to allow for a psychiatric report in 31 January 2019, but he has been told he faces a “substantial” prison sentence. Khuram appeared at Birmingham Crown Court and also pleaded guilty to burglary.

Khuram broke into the funeral home on Walsall Road, Great Barr on 11 November at around 3am. A spokesperson from the Crown Prosecution Service said: “While inside the funeral home the defendant lifted the lids of multiple coffins and sexually penetrated one of the corpses.”

Judge Francis Laird QC said: “I will adjourn your sentence to the date that has been raised in court. I will allow your solicitors the appropriate time to present to the court any medical report which your solicitors think will assist the court in determining the appropriate sentence for you.

“But you must be under no illusions that you will receive a sentence of imprisonment for your offending in this case – and a substantial sentence of imprisonment. You are remanded in custody.”

A Central England Co-operative spokesman said: “Our primary concern is for the families we serve and the welfare of our funeral colleagues who have all been deeply affected by this incredibly disturbing and unprecedented event.”
