York Council is expected to open a new waiting room with toilet facilities at York Crematorium this autumn, as it aims to improve accessibility for mourners and visitors.
News comes as building and maintenance work at the Bishopthorpe site began outside service times earlier this month (Wednesday 1 July).
While visitors may see workers, vehicles and equipment on the site, the City of York Council maintains that services will continue uninterrupted.
According to the local authority, local funeral directors have been notified of the project, which will also include general maintenance.
Cllr Katie Lomas, executive member for major projects, human rights, equality and inclusion at City of York Council, said: “Regular maintenance and investment in the crematorium is key to delivering a good service for residents at a sad and sensitive time.
“I’m glad we’re able to offer an additional, new waiting area and look forward to it opening this autumn.”
