East Lothian Crematorium and Memorial Gardens has officially opened in Musselburgh, offering digital technology that allows families to personalise funeral services with themed visuals, lighting and music.

Operated by Westerleigh Group, the facility is the first in Scotland to install what the company describes as “experiential” technology, enabling families to project imagery and soundscapes throughout the chapel during services.

The site includes a 112-seat chapel with additional standing space and a wall-sized projection surface referred to as “the canvas”. The system allows coordinated visuals, lighting and music designed to reflect the life and interests of the person being remembered.

Visitors can view service details on digital welcome screens and use a waiting room fitted with a photographic display.

The crematorium is fully accessible and provides 106 parking spaces, including six accessible bays and an overflow car park.

David Lees, manager of East Lothian Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, said: “We’re particularly pleased to be the first crematorium in Scotland – and only the third in the world – to have this incredible technology which takes the funeral experience to a whole new level.”

Similar installations have been introduced at the group’s Gedling Crematorium in Nottinghamshire and Basildon and District Crematorium in Essex.
