Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society has joined Central Co-op in a merger intended to deliver greater investment in funeral homes as well as stores.

The transfer, which took effect at the start of the week (15 September), combines two co-operatives with more than 150 years of history and creates a society with turnover close to £1bn. Leaders of both organisations said the move would strengthen long-term financial stability and resilience across their operations.

Membership services and benefits will remain unchanged, but Central Co-op said integration would bring a broader roll-out of its member app alongside investment in local communities.

To mark the transfer, a colleague event was held at Chelmsford City Racecourse.

Debbie Robinson, chief executive of Central Co-op, said: “It was a privilege to be with colleagues from Chelmsford Star on transfer day, hearing what matters most to them. Their commitment to Members, communities and each other is clear, and together we will build on that strength to deliver long-term stability, investment in colleagues and greater value for Members.”

Barry Wood, chief executive of Chelmsford Star Co-op, added: “Chelmsford Star has always been proud of its role in the Essex community. Joining Central Co-op allows us to protect that heritage while securing the investment and support needed for the future.”
