Broxtowe Borough Council has revealed that Bramcote Crematorium has donated £12,500 to two local charities through a recycling scheme that repurposes metals recovered after cremations.
The crematorium allocated £6,250 each to Treetops Hospice in Derbyshire and the Alzheimer’s Society in Nottingham.
The scheme is part of a national initiative in partnership with Orthometals and involves families consenting to the recycling of metals remaining after the cremation process, including orthopaedic implants and coffin components.
Cllr Helen Skinner, portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “Bereavement is a very challenging time; therefore, it is commendable to witness the emergence of positive outcomes that support others in similar situations. We express our gratitude to all families who have participated in the scheme, enabling us to raise this significant amount for Treetops Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.”
The national recycling initiative has raised more than £22m for charity to date, with a further £2m expected to be donated this year.
Separately, Bramcote Crematorium has been awarded a Bronze Award by the Greener Globe Funeral Standard in recognition of its environmental practices.
The award acknowledges the crematorium’s adoption of a formal environmental policy and efforts to involve staff in sustainability measures. These include energy efficiency improvements, waste reduction, and other initiatives aimed at lowering the facility’s ecological impact.
Cllr Skinner added: “This award is a testament to the dedication of the Bramcote Crematorium team and their commitment to making sustainability a core part of our mission. We are delighted to receive the Bronze Award from the Greener Globe Funeral Standard, and will continue to strive for even greater environmental standards to better serve our community and our planet.”
The Greener Globe Funeral Standard provides a sustainability audit tailored to the funeral sector. It sets evidence-based benchmarks to help funeral providers improve their environmental performance. To achieve the bronze level, organisations must have adopted or developed a verified environmental policy.
