Hailsham Town Council has announced a new phase of upgrades to Hailsham Cemetery, following recent improvements to pathways and visitor facilities.

The latest works will include the installation of a Book of Remembrance in the chapel, the conversion of a disused building into a waiting room, and the display of the historic cemetery bell in a bespoke glass cabinet.

The plans build on earlier works completed this year, including the resurfacing of footpaths and a full refurbishment of the public toilet. The upgrades aimed to improve accessibility and visitor experience across the site, with tarmac laid across all walkways and repairs carried out to tiles, soffits and pipework.

Both projects were funded through the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allocation.

Future improvements will see a dedicated space created for the Book of Remembrance in the chapel’s side room, allowing visitors to leave tributes to loved ones. The cemetery’s original bell, previously located outside the chapel, will be housed in a new display cabinet. A vacant building on site will also be refurbished to serve as a waiting area for visitors.

Grass cutting and site maintenance are now being managed directly by council staff, a change expected to reduce costs and maintain service standards.

Cllr Mary Laxton, chair of the assets management committee at Hailsham Town Council, said: “The footpath resurfacing earlier this year, along with the refurbishment of the public toilet, has already made a big difference to the site.

“Now, we’re focusing on adding more meaningful and practical upgrades. The Book of Remembrance, waiting room and bell display will not only preserve the cemetery’s history but will also offer a more respectful and comfortable space for those visiting their loved ones.”

Tony Lee, operations and facilities manager of Hailsham Cemetery, added: “The cemetery is a place of quiet reflection and peace, and it is important that we continue to improve and maintain these spaces. These new upgrades, along with the ongoing care of the cemetery’s grounds, will help us ensure that Hailsham Cemetery remains a tranquil and dignified place for future generations to visit and honour their loved ones.”
