Caerphilly County Borough Council has issued a reminder of its “long-established” cemetery regulations, after it saw a rise in incidents within its cemeteries in recent months.
At many of the local Caerphilly cemeteries, the council operates a lawn policy where only the memorial is permitted at the head of the grave.
This means that railings and fencing, kerbs, shrubs and trees, and chippings are not permitted, as they “directly limit the access of other visitors and prevent council staff from safely undertaking routine maintenance”.
As a result, the council will contact registered grave owners if a grave doesn’t comply with the agreed policy to request that any unauthorised items be “respectfully” removed.
A spokesperson from Caerphilly Council said: “While we recognise that cemeteries offer a place to remember and reflect, it is important to be respectful of others and to obey the guidance to ensure that everyone can access our cemeteries.
“Respecting these guidelines also allows staff to maintain these facilities to the high standards that we strive for.”
