Seaham Pet Crematorium officially opens

Although Seaham Pet Crematorium mainly handles dogs, it caters to any type of pet, and has helped cat, rabbit and even parrot owners deal with their loss

Family-run Seaham Pet Crematorium has officially opened in County Durham.

The new crematorium was opened and will be run by Sue Howes, her son John Robinson and his wife Ruth after the trio saw that there wasn’t a facility close enough for the community

The idea came to Robinson after he struggled to help a friend when his pet Bullmastiff died late on a Friday evening. Due to the time of the pet’s death, they had to wait until after the weekend before they could take the family pet to be cremated.

As a result, the family opened the new crematorium and offers a 24/7 collection service so that “no pet owner would have to go through the trauma” of not being able to call for professional help.

Howes said: “That night was when our journey started, and after jumping through many planning hoops, we opened for business on Seaham Grange Industrial Estate in September. We like to think that we offer a unique service for people who have lost their pets.”

Although Seaham Pet Crematorium mainly handles dogs, it caters to any type of pet, and has helped cat, rabbit and even parrot owners deal with their loss.

Howes added: “All three of us are pet parents and we have all experienced the sorrow of losing our beloved friends. For lots of people, their pet is an important part of the family and we know exactly the pain and grief it causes when these much-loved family members pass away.”

The new crematorium has also partnered with Sunderland-based animal charity Pawz for Thought by collecting blankets, food and a raffle to help raise money
