Scottish community council to help clean up cemetery

ELC will provide the community council members with equipment so they are able to do weeding and edging

Members of Prestonpans Community Council are set to help keep the local cemetery, on Nethershot Road, tidy.

Following positive discussions with East Lothian Council (ELC), it has been decided that the community council members will be able to start work on the project in the spring.

Community councillors came up with the idea of starting a group similar to the Tranent Wombles,a group of community members who help clean up the town of Tranent, after one member was shocked by the state of the cemetery.

ELC will provide the community council members with equipment so they are able to do weeding and edging.

The council stated on its facebook page: “We are able to weed and trim the edges but we can’t use anything electrical. They [ELC] will provide us with a box and some tools so if anyone wants to pop down and do a bit out with the arranged times, the equipment will be there.”

Janis Wilson, secretary of Prestonpans Community Council, added: “We hope to have as many volunteers as possible so we can keep the cemetery looking neat and tidy.”
