The price of a death certificate to increase almost threefold over the weekend across England and Wales.

The cost of a birth and marriage certificate will also be increasing, however only one copy of each is ever needed. Some families may need as many as 20 copies of a death certificate to give as proof to different authorities that someone has died.

The three-tier certificate fees will be removed and replaced by one single fee of £11 regardless of when the application is made, rising from the previous cost of £4. This could mean a potential overall fee of over £200 depending on how many copies are required.

A statutory priority certificate fee of £35 for a 24-hour service will also be introduced.

The new charges and legislation will come into force on Saturday 16 February.
